My toilet’s running — common causes
A toilet that keeps hissing, trickling or topping up can waste water. Learn what the symptoms may mean, what you can safely check and how A1 approaches toilet repairs.

A quick answer: why does a toilet keep running?
Water should stop entering the cistern once it has refilled. A faulty inlet valve, an outlet seal that does not close properly, or a flush mechanism held open can keep water flowing into the bowl. The sound alone does not identify the faulty part. An assessment helps distinguish the cause before choosing a repair.
What have you noticed?
Listen after a flush and again when the toilet has not been used. Is there a steady hiss, a visible trickle in the bowl, or a short refill that starts by itself? Note whether the problem began after a recent repair or changes when the flush button is released. These observations help you explain the issue without taking anything apart.
Common cause: the outlet seal is not holding
The outlet valve releases water for a flush. A worn seal or debris at its sealing surface can let water escape into the bowl between flushes. As the cistern level falls, it may refill intermittently. Different toilets use different seals and flush assemblies.
Common cause: the inlet valve or water level
The inlet valve refills the cistern and should shut off at the appropriate level. A valve fault or unsuitable float setting can allow continued filling, with excess water passing through the overflow. A hiss can be a clue, but it does not prove which part needs attention.
Common cause: the flush mechanism stays open
A sticking button or a linkage that fails to release can prevent the outlet valve closing. If running begins after each flush, mention whether the button feels stuck. Do not force the mechanism or bend parts to try to stop it.
A simple check for a quiet leak
Urban Utilities recommends a food-dye check for toilet leaks: put a little food colouring in the cistern water and look for colour reaching the bowl without flushing. Only do this if the lid lifts easily and safely; some lids are attached to buttons, and concealed cisterns need different access. Follow the fixture manufacturer’s guidance. Colour reaching the bowl suggests water is passing through, but does not identify the precise part. Skip the check if access is awkward and describe the symptoms when you call.
When to call for help
Contact us if the toilet keeps running, repeatedly refills by itself or shows water outside the bowl. Water on the floor, visible ceramic damage or an overflowing fixture needs prompt attention. If an accessible toilet isolation tap can be closed easily, that can stop its water supply while you arrange help; do not force a seized tap. A running cistern and a blocked toilet are different faults, so tell us if the bowl is also rising or draining slowly.
Repair or replace: what matters?
A toilet does not automatically need replacing because it runs. The condition of the fixture, the fault and availability of compatible parts all matter. Manufacturer parts catalogues distinguish inlet valves, outlet valves and model-specific repair components. If you already know the toilet brand or model, have that information ready. Keep any details from a previous repair so we can discuss what has already been tried.
What happens at an A1 toilet repair visit?
Call us or request a visit with your name, phone number, suburb and a short description. We contact you to discuss the issue and availability. Once the appointment is agreed, we send confirmation by text or email with an arrival window, followed by an on-the-way courtesy call or text. On site, we assess the toilet, explain the options and provide an upfront fixed-price quote for approval. If the cause needs more involved diagnostics, we walk you through the steps and agree investigation costs separately. We take before, during and after photos. Payment is collected on completion; larger or multi-day arrangements are confirmed separately.

Running toilet FAQs
Why does my toilet refill when nobody has flushed?
Water escaping past the outlet seal can lower the cistern level and trigger refilling. An assessment checks the cause rather than assuming the inlet valve needs replacing.
Will a running toilet affect my water bill?
It can increase metered water use. The amount and cost depend on the leak and your supplier’s current charges; there is no reliable single cost figure for every toilet.
Does every running toilet need replacing?
No. We assess the fixture, fault and compatible parts, then explain repair or replacement options before quoting.
Can you give me the repair price over the phone?
We discuss the issue first, then assess on site and quote the agreed work at a fixed price for approval. Any paid diagnostic investigation is agreed separately.
